The hidden cost of bad LinkedIn data: enrichment vs scraping
Most LinkedIn lead data is wrong, stale, or scraped from cached profiles. Here's what bad data actually costs you.
You see "Senior Director of Demand Gen, ScaleUp Inc, joined March 2024" in your enrichment tool. Looks great. Then you DM them. No response. Why?
Because they changed jobs in November. Your data was cached from 8 months ago.
Why LinkedIn data goes stale fast
LinkedIn profiles change constantly:
- ~10% of professionals change jobs every year
- Title changes happen even more often (internal promotions)
- Company rebrands, acquisitions, and pivots reframe everyone's profile
- Profile pic updates happen quarterly for active users
Any data source that scraped a profile more than 60 days ago is unreliable.
The two approaches
Scraping: Bulk collection of LinkedIn profiles into a database. Cheap per record. Stale within months.
Enrichment via real-time signal: Watching live engagement and pulling profile data only when a person engages. Fresh by definition.
Saava uses the second approach. When someone engages with a watched post, we pull their profile in real time. The data is correct for that exact moment.
What stale data costs you
We modeled this with a customer running 200 outbound touches per week:
- 30% of contacts have changed roles since the data was scraped → wrong context in outreach
- 15% of emails are bouncing → deliverability damage
- 10% of phones are dead numbers → wasted dial time
The total opportunity cost: about 40% of their outbound effort burned on dead data.
Why "free" lead lists are expensive
There's a category of cheap lead-list vendors selling "1M B2B contacts for $99." These lists are usually:
- Scraped 6–24 months ago
- Never updated
- Sold to thousands of buyers (so everyone's outreaching the same people)
What you save on the data, you lose 10x in deliverability damage and AE time.
The framework
Spend more on fewer, fresher leads. The math always works.
A list of 100 confirmed-fresh, engaged ICP leads outperforms a list of 10,000 cold scraped contacts every time. By a lot.
